Leadership, and the Government that Follows Measuring a ruler’s success can easily be defined in the satire Animal Farm. The spoof is based on a totalitarian leadership. The four main characters in this book are the pigs on the farm. They go against Napoleon’s will and represent the white movement. The reason this story becomes prevalent in the essay is because it shows how few people can turn around a society. Orwell describes in animal farm just how he got his idea for the novel. â€Å"I saw a little boy, perhaps ten years old, driving a huge cart-horse along a narrow path, whipping it whenever it tried to turn. It struck me that if only such animals became aware of their strength we should have no power over them, and that men exploit†¦show more content†¦Many know Hitler as the murderous leader of Germany in the early nineteen hundreds. Hitler was a brilliant leader arguably. Although un-ethical, he was respected. People listened to him and followed his guidance because he persuaded people so well. These people didn’t have minds of their own so he gave one to them. The rules of his leadership resided in extreme dictatorship. After World War 1, Hitler had a secured supreme political power. Hitler went on to gain their support by persuading most Germans he was their savior from the Depression, the Communists, and the Jews along with other undesirable minorities. After Hitler’s rise, he began the Nazi party. Few would have thought that the Nazi Party, starting as a gang of unemployed soldiers in 1919, would become the legal government of Germany by 1933. The Nazi party rose and crashed. It became more finalized after 1925 when Hitler was released from prison, and formally resurrected the Nazi Party. Hitler began rebuilding and reorganizing the Party, waiting for an appropriate time to gain political power in Germany. Hitler skillfully made his way through the Nazi Party politics and emerged as the sole leader. The Nazi party once again began to fall yet was saved wh en new government officials were elected and new campaigns were run. This now had captured over eighteen percent of the vote, making the Nazi party the second largest party. Leading the Nazi Party got Hitler the advertisement he needed. Animal Testing Should be Banned  ¨Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisioned and abused in US labs every year ¨ ( ¨11 Facts About Animal Testing ¨). Imagine if that was someones animal getting tortured in labs just to test things such as beauty products and perfume. Animal testing was first suggested when,  ¨Charles Darwin evolutionary theory in the mid 1850s also served to suggest that animals could serve as effective models to facilitate biological understanding in humans ¨ (Murnaghan). But,  ¨the enormous breakout came in 1922 when animal testing allowed for insulin ¨ (Murnaghan). Animal testing should be banned because it is inhumane, most of the testing on animals does not benefit humans, and animals bodies work differently than humans. Anointed King Essay Within Shakespeares play Richard II there are many questionable and untrusting characters. Truth and duty are only illusions within the play. Lust for power and control override the order of England and its ordained king. Its believed that it is by the will of God that Richard is king. No mortal man can come between what God has set before them as rule. The final decision is Gods and the only way that Gods choice can be changed is by God himself, and no one else. God takes the Garden of Eden from Adam, and like Adam, England is taken from Richard. It is questionable if Bolingbroke acts against Gods will or through Gods will. Richard is king, and though a sad choice, he has been ordained by God as king and ruler of England. It is not for his followers to decide if he is to be replaced by someone that they feel would be a better caretaker of the garden. In Richard II , by overtaking the crown and replacing Richard with Bolingbroke, society is going against its own belief that Richard is ordained by God. From an Englishmans point of view it could be argued that God is somewhat responsible for the state that England is in, because they believe Richard was chosen by God. Within Richard II , God is believed to be forsaken so that England can become a great kingdom again, and this is done in hope that Richards wrongs can be made right by Bolingbroke. Richards opposition York, Bolingbroke, and Northumberland believe that what they are doing is done to regenerate the badly tended garden. They want to replant it with Bolingbroke as king, and this they believe will restore England to order. By judging and replacing Richard they are going against what their society believes is Gods will. This is the worst mistake of all, because as the saying goes two wrongs dont make a right. They are playing against a power far greater than anything they could imagine Richard being able to do. Their worries should not be of what Richard will do to them if they do not succeed, but what God will do to them at any given time. Northumberland tells of how the kingship will be restored and the garden revived. If then we shall shake off our slavish yoke,/ Imp out our drooping countrys broken wing,/ Redeem from broking pawn the blemished crown,/ Wipe off the dust that hides our scepters gilt,/ And make high majesty look like itself, (Richard II II. i. 302-306) He makes this statement as if he has a choice in the matter and as if God plays no role in what will happen. He ends up acting on his words by supporting Bolingbroke to overthrow Richard as king. York is handed the kingdom to maintain in the absence of Richard. He allows the kingdom to fall into the hands of Bolingbroke by siding with him. Because my power is weak and all ill-left. But if I could, by Him that gave me life, I would attach you all and make you stoop/Unto the sovereign mercy of the King./But since I cannot, be it known unto you well- /I do remain as neuter. (Richard II II. iii. 159-163). He believes that what he is doing is not only going against Richard, but also and most importantly, against God. He should stand up to Bolingbroke and go against his rebellion. He should die rather than giving in so easily. It is not Richard that they fear, but Gods wrath. Richard would not have lasted as king for so long if he did not have the anointment of God to put fear in his fellow Englishman. The most important social belief that Richard has is that of being chosen by God, not by mortal man. Richard believes that his presence and the belief that he is chosen by God will unspark the rebellion. ( Richard II III. ii. 54-57)His ignorance and belief that he is above mortal man leads to his own downfall. He relates himself to God as being of God and from God. It can be thought that he considers himself Gods own son, a new Jesus with a golden crown instead of one made of thorns. His own flatteries, blinded by gold, take him farther away from his true duties as king, and in turn take him further from God. God can also be considered at fault for the state that England is in because it is believed that God ordained Richard to rule the throne. This statement is never directly stated in the play, but can be examined to some degree. Since Richard is believed to be the choice of God as ruler of all England it should go without saying that Richards mistakes are also Gods mistakes. Bolingbroke and others would never use this as reasoning for overtaking Richard, because it would be a death sentence for themselves. The thought of Gods reasposibility of chosing Richard as being a bad one would never be seen as even closely justifiable. The truth, although not accepted, is that if God truly does ordain rulers than their actions should also be judged as the actions of God himself. If this does hold, than all that precede against Richard in any form also will be going against God. God takes the Garden of Eden from Adam and has the power of taking England away from Richard. Adam was not a good keeper of the Garden of Eden, as Richard is not a good keeper of England. God giveth, and God taketh away. Adam lets the Garden go by not looking out for weeds (Satan/sin) that needed to be plucked out. England needs to kill Richard in order to save the rest of the garden. Richard ignores weeds that threaten his own throne, such as Bolingbroke and Northumberland. He should get rid of Bolingbroke permanently before he becomes too large in popularity to kill. It can also be seen that God uses Bolingbroke and Northumberland as pawns in order to rid England of a corrupt king. Bolingbroke fears that the events that have given him power are not by the grace of God. I pardon him, as God shall pardon me (Richard II V. iii. 138). He fears that he is going against Gods will and in the end will be no better off than Richard, or possibly worse. Choices sometimes have to be made within a community that go against tradition and the traditional role of God within society. Change occurs by force. Without change and risk one will never know what is truly right and what is truly wrong. Society can place their own rules often using God as the final power. This style of ruling is very intelligent. It gives the ruling party more than an army to impose authority, but also it uses an unseen threat that holds societies beliefs sacred and untouchable. This is how Richard depends upon rule within England. The change is complete, and he is not crazy about Earth anymore, and not trying to still build a rocket. Accepting of the change, Mr. Bittering is now not human, only a Martian. Changing throughout the story, Mr. Bittering progressively transforms from human to a Martian. Through the tale, Ray Bradbury hoped to portray how new things caused people to change. Expressed in the story is a clear display of how change is an inevitable part of everyone’s life and that sometimes change is for the better. If Harry did not adapt, he would of gone crazy or possibly even died. Much like Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, it was absolutely necessary for Scrooge and Mr. Bittering to change. When Grammar Girl was chided for writing â€Å"noise canceling headphones† instead of â€Å"noise-canceling headphones,† she pointed out that leaving out the hyphen in that phrase â€Å"causes no ambiguity.† When one of my own readers called my attention to the unhyphenated phrase â€Å"19th century standardization of time† in a recent post, I decided to change it to â€Å"nineteenth-century standardization of time†- not because I think it ambiguous without a hyphen, but because Chicago is the style guide I’ve chosen for these posts. I failed to note that Chicago offers an analogy for hyphenating nineteenth-century before a noun: fourteenth-century monastery (7.85). Note: Chicago recommends spelling out numerals below 100, so I must also change 19th to nineteenth. The AP Stylebook, on the other hand, requires the spelling out of numerals ten and below. For AP, 19th century is correct. Still another stylebook, The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation) offers this advice about hyphenating constructions like â€Å"nineteenth century standardization†: As important as hyphens are to clear writing, they can become an annoyance if overused. Avoid adding hyphens when the meaning is clear. Many phrases are so familiar (e.g.,  high school, twentieth century, one hundred percent) that they can go before a noun without risk of confusing the reader. Examples: a high school senior a twentieth century throwback one hundred percent correct Because practice varies, I wouldn’t begin to attempt to list â€Å"all the exceptions for hyphenating compound adjectives.† The best advice I can offer the reader who asked for such a list is this: Choose a style guide and follow its recommendations- advice I shall try to follow more carefully in future posts. There was an over-reliance by investing and financing countries on the willingness and enthusiasm by Eurozone core countries including Germany to bailout the Greek economy in case of a debt crisis. Throughout this period, the Greek economy continued to charge low interest rates in order to stimulate investment in the economy. As a result, the public borrowing continued to increase pacing the way for a sovereign debt crisis. In a paper presented at the Bank of Greece workshop, Manessiotis (2011) explains that poor fiscal discipline and lack of competitiveness in the economy were major factors that contributed to the crisis. These aspects of the economy should have received urgent priority following Greece’s entry into the Eurozone. Fiscal deficit ran up to 5.3% of GDP after 2006 whereas the target was 3.0%. Conditions Imposed by IMF on Greece In 2010, it became nearly certain that Greece could not meet its sovereign debt payments and would inevitably default. The implications for the entire Eurozone region would have been severe. Hence, in May 2010, the Eurozone in collaboration with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) prepared a bailout package worth â‚ ¬110 billion of which the IMF was to contribute â‚ ¬30 billion to enable Greece to improve its economy and avoid defaulting on its debts (Financial Post, 2013). This bailout package was subject to certain conditions. Mainly, the conditions required Greece to improve its fiscal performance and make the economy more competitive and open. The first condition imposed by the IMF required Greece to implement austerity measures in order to control the fiscal deficit. It was required that Greece reduce its public spending in order to narrow the fiscal deficit. Secondly, the fiscal debt problem was to be controlled by a policy of privatization of public assets. This measure would prevent the government from incurring additional debts to finance public organizations. By the end of 2015, the IMF required â‚ ¬50 billion worth of public assets to be privatized. Spain controlled mostly some islands off the coast of Central America. The most important of these were Cuba and Puerto Rico. The United States was led to believe that the Spanish mosgoverned and abused the people of these islands. In fact, Spain did overtax and mistreat the Cubans, who rebelled in 1868 and again in 1895. Thus, the American people felt sympathetic toward the Cuban independence movement. In addition, Spain had frequently interfered with trade between its colonies and the United States. Even though the United States had been a trading partner with Cuba since the seventeenth century, Spain sometimes tried to completely stop their trade with Cuba. In Spain doing so, this sometimes caused damage to U.S. commercial interests. The United States highly disagreed with Spain’s right to in terfere with this trade relationship. (Bachrach, 12) The United States was also concerned that other trading and commercial interests were threatened by the number of ships and soldiers Spain kept in the area. Ritual – wine taralli

Nonna's Wine Taralli In a tiny house surrounded by a forest of fig trees in Rende, Cosenza, Calabria, my great great grandmother taught her little granddaughter how to make â€Å"Nonna's Wine Taralli. † That little girl would eventually become my grandmother and she would also teach me the art of wine taralli-making. Two cups of my grandfather's homemade white wine, fourteen ounces of canola oil and sugar, two teaspoons of baking powder, an envelope of â€Å"Lievito Bartolino,† three and a half pounds of flour and â€Å"un po' di aranzi,† as my Italian grandmother says, which are the licorice-flavoured seeds of the nise.These ingredients combine to make â€Å"Nonna's Wine Taralli† – a cookie-textured, ring shaped and slightly sweetened version of the traditional Italian taralli, whose recipe has been passed on for generations by the women in my southern-Italian family. Throughout the years, the roles between my grandmother and I have remained the same. Finally, the making of wine taralli is formative and strengthens existing relationships and social statuses (24). An abundance are made to last several months since we gather only twice a year to make them.Since so many ot them are being produced at one time, he participants, especially young granddaughters like myself, have the opportunity to develop the ability to create and perfect the art of taralli-making. It also allows participants to strengthen existing familial and cultural bonds and social statuses. The familial bond between grandmothers, mothers and daughters and the familial status of being a member of this particular family are present and strengthened. The cultural bond that is shar ed in being members of the Italian heritage is strengthened by the practicing of an age old cultural tradition.The bond of womanhood is trengthened in that the participants are exclusively Italian women from the same family. These bonds are present while not explicitly stated. While there is only a small group of participants, the bonds and social statuses that are shared amongst them are strong and meaningful. A popular Italian saying that is spoken by my grandmother when making wine taralli is, â€Å"one can resolve any argument over a glass of wine and a handful of taralli. † As I get older, it becomes more clear to me what the ultimate goals of this ritual are and how they are achieved.
