There are many theories that have information about behaviour, most of them reflect a cognitive perspective, focusing mainly on the role of conscious thought and feeling. This essay is going to be based on the theories based on theorist Sigmund Freud and B.F Skinner and their perception if our behaviour is beyond our control. The first psychologist that I will be discussing is Sigmund Freud and his perspective on behaviour and the conscious mind. Within this essay I will be focusing on the unconscious mind, the id ego and super ego, the defence mechanisms, psychosexual stages and also a case study on Anna O. The second psychologist I will be discussing is B F skinner and will cover operant and classical conditioning, positive and negative reinforcement and finally behaviour shaping modification. Freud was known for being the main theorist who explored the human mind more thoroughly than any other theorist after him. Freud believes when we give an account of our behaviour it is rarely a true account of our motivation is given. This is because humans are very good at self-deception and there for lie. Freud often used psychoanalysis as a talking cure, as he encouraged his patients to speak freely about what their symptoms were and describe exactly what was on their mind McLeod, S (2013).
